Meeting in the State capital on Saturday, the CPI State executive decided to field G. Krishnaprasad, former State president of the All India Students Federation (AISF) and party district council member, in Alappuzha. The leadership chose him from a panel of three names that had been proposed by the party’s Alappuzha district council. Party general secretary A.B. Bardhan was present at the State executive committee meeting.
According to party insiders, the predominant view in the State executive committee was that Mr. Krishnaprasad, who lives in the town area and is very active in the district, would be an ideal challenger to any candidate that the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) fields in the constituency. The byelection was necessitated by Congress MLA K.C. Venugopal’s election to the Lok Sabha in the recent general elections.
